While her husband is slowly dying of consumption\, Peggy conceals draft dodgers and deserters in a secret cellar under their bedroom floor. She does this while managing a farm\, raising five children\, and serving as a postmaster for the underground railroad run by Mennonites and Dunkers. \nKarl Rhodes is a great-great-grandson of Peggy Rhodes. He retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond\, where he was a senior managing editor in the Research Department. Previously\, he was director of external communications for Media General and executive editor of Virginia Business magazine. DESCRIPTION:Mennonite Life will host its Annual Storytelling Night on Monday\, August 7\, 2023\, at 7 pm at Landisville Mennonite Church. The event will feature storytellers Karl McKinney and Karen Sensenig. Told in a series of short-format stories\, each storyteller relates personal anecdotes from richly varied life experiences. This is an in-person event that will also stream online. To connect virtually the night of the event visit bit.ly/MLifeFB. Mennonite Life welcomes donations to support our storytelling and conservation efforts. \nKarl McKinney lives with his wife Kellie in Landisville\, PA. Karl serves as the Intercultural Leadership Minister of LMC (formerly Lancaster Mennonite Conference). He is focused on helping LMC to address oppression in its mindset\, systems\, and structures. \nKaren Sensenig was aware of God’s presence as a young child in the midst of a coupe in Ethiopia and has carried trust in God throughout her adult life as a wife\, mother\, teacher\, pastor\, chaplain\, and now as a potter and spiritual director. Her life has unfolded in ways she could not have imagined\, always stretching her to embrace more of what God has called her to be\, as she seeks to live with expectancy\, rather than expectations. Most of her stories will take place in intercultural settings.

SUMMARY:Archaeological Discoveries at the 1719 Museum
DESCRIPTION:Mennonite Life hosts Dr. Timothy Trussell\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology\, director of the Millersville University Archaeology Program\, and co-director of the MU Atlantic World Center will speak about recent archaeological discoveries at the 1719 Museum. \nTrussell conducted field schools for students in the fall of 2020 and 2021. One objective was to find evidence of the original 1711 log home the Herr family built for shelter before the existing stone house was completed in 1719. \nLearn about artifacts the students uncovered\, including pottery\, glassware\, Indigenous projectile points\, and what they add to our understanding. \nThe 1719 Museum benefits from research programs such as this one by the Atlantic World Center of Millersville University. Up-to-date research results improve the interpretation of the property and the people who lived on the historic site.
