Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) will commemorate its 75th anniversary on Feb. 14-15 with a gathering in Wichita, Kansas, bringing hundreds of people back to the roots of MDS and its mission to respond, rebuild, and restore hope after disasters.
The Celebration of Service will be held at Ridgepoint Church in Wichita, with side events—including a house build and tours of the MDS Cabinet Shop—at other local sites.
The 75th anniversary celebration will bring something for everyone, including a house build, tours of the MDS Cabinet Shop, a children’s book, a commemorative photo book, and live storytelling events.
Come join volunteers—and hear their stories—as they play corn hole and volleyball, and gather for a sewing circle.
MDS Executive Director Kevin King described the organization that grew out of the vision from a Sunday School picnic in Hesston in 1950. “Today, our vision is to strive to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those affected by disasters as we rebuild homes and restore hope by organizing and empowering volunteers in the U.S. and Canada,” he said. “We do this with the values of faith in action and caring relationships while we work together.”
