It has been built on more than 55 years of history beginning with Landis Homes. We are following God’s call to creatively serve the diverse needs and interests of older adults by developing opportunities and collaborative relationships and by honoring and enriching the lives of aging adults and their families in communities of Christ-like love. What is now Landis Communities began in the early 1960s when the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities (now EMM) began exploring how they might develop a community for retired Mennonite mission workers, pastors, and others. Frank Enck, the chair of the program planning committee, challenged the founders to “Keep in mind our vision of creating a community rather than a traditional old people’s home facility.” This vision of becoming a Christ-centered community has guided our growth these nearly 60 years. In 1982, ownership was transferred from EMM to a separate nonprofit under the auspices of Lancaster Mennonite Conference (now LMC). In 2011, Landis Homes created Landis Communities as an organization giving support to a number of affiliates, including Welsh Mountain Home, a personal care location with deep ties to EMM and LMC. The name Landis has value—the history, the legacy, the excellent reputation. It has been built on nearly 60 years of history beginning with Landis Homes. Currently, our work is in three broad areas, Landis Homes, a traditional retirement community near Lititz, Landis Home, and Community Based Services, made up of services to persons in their homes, and Landis Quality Living, dedicated to bringing housing options for those who don’t have the needed financial resources for traditional retirement communities.
