Mennonite Life – Author Talk:

May 9, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The Mennonite and Brethren Music of Music of Peggy’s War

Peggy’s War is a meticulously researched novel that adheres closely to the true story of Margaret “Peggy” Rhodes and the young men she protected during the Civil War. She is a fiercely loyal Union woman living the Shenandoah Valley, a region in Virginia that supports the Confederacy. While her husband is slowly dying of consumption, Peggy conceals draft dodgers and deserters in a secret cellar under their bedroom floor. She does this while managing a farm, raising five children, and serving as a postmaster for the underground railroad run by Mennonites and Dunkers.

Karl Rhodes is a great-great-grandson of Peggy Rhodes. He retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where he was a senior managing editor in the Research Department. Previously, he was director of external communications for Media General and executive editor of Virginia Business magazine. He and his wife, Kim, live in Richmond, Va.

Peggy’s War is available for purchase here.

This event is complimentary. Streaming will be available.
