American neighborhoods are increasingly filled with buildings that were once churches.  Today they are homes, restaurants, or micro-breweries.  Though the building is not the church, these repurposed buildings are artifacts that tell stories of communities that have died.  They tell stories of changing neighborhoods, how society has become secular and the church that was once a vital anchor to the neighborhood has become irrelevant to eventually withered away.  Why do some churches embrace adaptive to change and find the capacity to re-mission, while other churches lack energy, life and simply fade away?   

In John 9 a man born blind is consigned by society to a life of begging and suffering because his blindness is interpreted as an indication of sinfulness.  Jesus sees, embraces, and heals this man.  One whose dignity and humanity is disfigured by blindness is given new life.  Why are the religious leaders and townspeople not rejoicing?  Why were the disciples more concerned about whether the blind man was a sinner than concerned with his humanity and predicament?  Everyone is so concerned about who sinned and who is who that they fail to see the amazing miracle of new life given to this man. They are blinded by their paradigm, which reinforces their power and status and unable to see Christ in their midst. 

 Are dying churches blinded by their paradigm? I’ve seen dying churches focus more on how to stay together and have shepherding care than a mission for the changing neighborhood that surrounds them. Do dying churches despair because they no longer have resources (i.e. large offerings, youth, etc.) instead embracing the most valuable resource of all, the Spirit that dwells within them?  Churches that die seem to measure things that lead them to embody a spirit of death.  Then there are churches who by all means should be closed but find the spiritual capacity to move toward God’s preferred future and become a new creation.  We will need to learn to discern the spirits and change what we measure and our vision for congregations to be Spirit-led movements multiplying disciples of Jesus. 

As a Spirit-led movement in LMC, how might we grow in our ability to discern the Spirit’s direction and shift our paradigms so that we have new eyes to “see” what God is doing around us and become a movement that is multiplying disciples of Jesus through our life and witness?

Los barrios estadounidenses están cada vez más llenos de edificios que alguna vez fueron iglesias. Hoy son viviendas, restaurantes o microcervecerías. Aunque el edificio no es la iglesia, estos edificios reutilizados son artefactos que cuentan historias de comunidades que han muerto. Cuentan historias de vecindarios cambiantes, cómo la sociedad se ha vuelto secular y la iglesia que una vez fue un ancla vital para el vecindario se ha vuelto irrelevante para finalmente desaparecer. ¿Por qué algunas iglesias adoptan el cambio adaptativo y encuentran la capacidad de re-misionar, mientras que otras iglesias carecen de energía, vida y simplemente se desvanecen? 

En Juan 9, la sociedad condena a un hombre ciego de nacimiento a una vida de mendicidad y sufrimiento porque su ceguera se interpreta como una indicación de pecaminosidad. Jesús ve, abraza y sana a este hombre. Aquel cuya dignidad y humanidad está desfigurada por la ceguera recibe nueva vida. ¿Por qué los líderes religiosos y la gente del pueblo no se regocijan? ¿Por qué los discípulos estaban más preocupados por si el ciego era un pecador que por su humanidad y situación? Todos están tan preocupados por quién pecó y quién es quién que no logran ver el asombroso milagro de la nueva vida dada a este hombre. Están cegados por su paradigma, que refuerza su poder y estatus y son incapaces de ver a Cristo en medio de ellos. 

¿Están las iglesias moribundas cegadas por su paradigma? He visto iglesias moribundas enfocarse más en cómo permanecer juntas y tener cuidado pastoral que en una misión para el vecindario cambiante que las rodea. ¿Se desesperan las iglesias moribundas porque ya no tienen recursos (es decir, grandes ofrendas, jóvenes, etc.) en lugar de abrazar el recurso más valioso de todos, el Espíritu que mora dentro de ellas? Las iglesias que mueren parecen medir cosas que las llevan a encarnar un espíritu de muerte. Luego están las iglesias que por todos los medios deberían estar cerradas pero encuentran la capacidad espiritual para avanzar hacia el futuro preferido de Dios y convertirse en una nueva creación. Tendremos que aprender a discernir los espíritus y cambiar lo que medimos y nuestra visión de que las congregaciones sean movimientos guiados por el Espíritu que multipliquen a los discípulos de Jesús. 

Como movimiento dirigido por el Espíritu en LMC, ¿cómo podemos crecer en nuestra capacidad para discernir la dirección del Espíritu y cambiar nuestros paradigmas para que tengamos nuevos ojos para “ver” lo que Dios está haciendo a nuestro alrededor y convertirnos en un movimiento que está multiplicando discípulos de Dios? Jesús a través de nuestra vida y testimonio?
