Treasuring the Legacy . . . Embracing the New

As a Bishop Elders Team, and as LMC, we just experienced a very impactful weekend. Friday was our bi-monthly gathering as bishops and CEC (Conference Executive Committee). As we meet every other month our desire is to spend time together in the Lord’s presence in both worship and in our work, discerning God’s heart for LMC in this new season. On Saturday many of us attended the memorial service for David W. Shenk, the oldest son of one of the early EMM pioneer missionaries to East Africa.

These two events stirred me in deep ways in my work as a part of the Bishop Elders Team as we seek God’s direction in this new season as a network of churches. In both meetings I was reminded of the historic collaborations between LMC and EMM . . . AND the current priority between these two entities. Together, both LMC and EMM, have made a fresh commitment to collaborative work and mission in this season. As the LMC vision states, our aspiration is to be “a Spirit-led movement” . . . this is affirmed by LMC and EMM together. We are still learning to grow in our awareness and sensitivity to the Spirit’s leading.

At David’s memorial service I was reminded of the legacy that our forebearers carried. They also had an aspiration to be a Spirit-led movement. Without that LMC and EMM would not have traveled to the “ends of the earth” to place pioneer missionaries in East Africa. We must treasure this legacy! Looking back, we can critique and criticize some of those results, but taking the risk to follow the Spirit with human beings who are learning to follow the Spirit, will usually result in some “imperfection”. As we treasure this legacy may we also learn from the lessons in our past.

I also was impressed by the Spirit during this memorial service that God not only wants us to treasure this legacy (and build upon it), but is also calling us to embrace the “new” . . . The new things that God is doing in us and among us as a Spirit-led movement. Again, entering the “new” will not be without some imperfection, but we are trusting Holy Spirit to lead us. Please join us in prayer in this regarding . . . “Lord, we ask that you would give us eyes to see and treasure the precious legacy that you’ve deposited in our midst as a movement and to embrace the new things that you are doing among us that build upon this legacy. Amen!”

Atesorando el Legado. . . Abrazando lo nuevo

Como equipo de Bishop Elders y como LMC, acabamos de experimentar un fin de semana muy impactante. El viernes fue nuestra reunión bimensual como obispos y CEC (Comité Ejecutivo de la Conferencia). Como nos reunimos cada dos meses, nuestro deseo es pasar tiempo juntos en la presencia del Señor tanto en la adoración como en nuestro trabajo, discerniendo el corazón de Dios para LMC en esta nueva temporada. El sábado, muchos de nosotros asistimos al servicio conmemorativo de David W. Shenk, el hijo mayor de uno de los primeros misioneros pioneros de EMM en África Oriental.

Estos dos eventos me conmovieron profundamente en mi trabajo como parte del Equipo de obispos ancianos mientras buscamos la dirección de Dios en esta nueva temporada como red de iglesias. En ambas reuniones recordé las colaboraciones históricas entre LMC y EMM. . . Y la prioridad actual entre estas dos entidades. Juntos, tanto LMC como EMM, han hecho un nuevo compromiso con el trabajo colaborativo y la misión en esta temporada. Como establece la visión de LMC, nuestra aspiración es ser “un movimiento guiado por el Espíritu” . . . esto es afirmado por LMC y EMM en conjunto. Todavía estamos aprendiendo a crecer en nuestra conciencia y sensibilidad a la dirección del Espíritu.

En el funeral de David recordé el legado que llevaron nuestros antepasados. También tenían la aspiración de ser un movimiento dirigido por el Espíritu. Sin eso, LMC y EMM no habrían viajado a los “confines de la tierra” para colocar misioneros pioneros en África Oriental. ¡Debemos atesorar este legado! Mirando hacia atrás, podemos criticar y criticar algunos de esos resultados, pero correr el riesgo de seguir al Espíritu con seres humanos que están aprendiendo a seguir al Espíritu, generalmente resultará en alguna “imperfección”. Mientras atesoramos este legado, también podemos aprender de las lecciones de nuestro pasado.

También me impresionó el Espíritu durante este servicio conmemorativo de que Dios no solo quiere que atesoremos este legado (y construyamos sobre él), sino que también nos está llamando a abrazar lo “nuevo”. . . Las cosas nuevas que Dios está haciendo en nosotros y entre nosotros como un movimiento guiado por el Espíritu. Una vez más, entrar en lo “nuevo” no estará exento de imperfecciones, pero confiamos en que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe. Por favor, únase a nosotros en oración en este respecto. . . “Señor, te pedimos que nos des ojos para ver y atesorar el precioso legado que has depositado entre nosotros como movimiento y para aceptar las cosas nuevas que estás haciendo entre nosotros que se basan en este legado. ¡Amén!”
