“As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him, and following His example]. And going on [further] from there He noticed two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them [to follow Him as His disciples]. As we anticipate and prepare for the LMC events at the end of this month . . . Spring Leadership Assembly (March 31) and Celebration of Church Life (March 31-April 1) and the theme of Making Disciples of Jesus, we, as a Bishop Elders Team, we have a sense of expectancy for what God wants to impart into LMC in this new season. We are still learning to be a “Spirit-led movement”, but we are growing as we aspire to honor God as a Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches.
As I ponder these simple words of Jesus, “Follow me,” I wonder if we can truly grasp what these words meant to the disciples in the Palestine of that day. And maybe an even better question, “How does it translate into our lives as followers and disciples of Jesus today?” There is something about learning to know and follow Jesus that is at the core of being effective in building God’s kingdom and making disciples. Jesus walked with the disciples, modeled for them what intimacy with the Father looked like, and showed them the ways of the kingdom. Three years later, before he ascended to heaven he said to them, “All authority (all power of absolute rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28: 18-20 The Amplified Bible

Mientras anticipamos y nos preparamos para los eventos de LMC a finales de este mes. . . Asamblea de liderazgo de primavera (31 de marzo) y Celebración de la vida de la iglesia (31 de marzo al 1 de abril) y el tema de Hacer discípulos de Jesús, nosotros, como equipo de obispos y ancianos, tenemos un sentido de expectativa por lo que Dios quiere impartir en LMC en esta nueva temporada. Todavía estamos aprendiendo a ser un “movimiento guiado por el Espíritu”, pero estamos creciendo a medida que aspiramos a honrar a Dios como una Comunidad de Iglesias Anabaptistas.
Mientras reflexiono sobre estas sencillas palabras de Jesús, “Sígueme”, me pregunto si realmente podemos comprender lo que estas palabras significaron para los discípulos en la Palestina de esos días. Y tal vez una pregunta aún mejor, “¿Cómo se traduce en nuestras vidas como seguidores y discípulos de Jesús hoy?” Hay algo acerca de aprender a conocer y seguir a Jesús que es fundamental para ser eficaz en la construcción del reino de Dios y hacer discípulos. Jesús caminó con los discípulos, modeló para ellos cómo era la intimidad con el Padre y les mostró los caminos del reino. Tres años después, antes de ascender al cielo, les dijo: “Toda potestad (todo poder de gobierno absoluto) me ha sido dada en el cielo y en la tierra. Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones [ayudad a la gente a aprender de Mí, a creer en Mí y a obedecer Mis palabras], bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, enseñándoles a guardar todo lo que te he mandado; y he aquí, yo estoy con vosotros todos los días [permaneciendo con vosotros perpetuamente, sin importar las circunstancias, y en toda ocasión], hasta el fin del mundo”.
