I give thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ for all the ways the Spirit is moving across LMC. From Celebration of Church Life to engagement with congregations, I’m bumping into leaders asking questions about ideas they have for trying new things. It is also inspiring to see the Spirit at work in the global church and realize LMC is part of a larger family of congregations thanks to years of EMM sending missionaries. The other week Bishop Elder Tuyen’s weekly email shared the experience of people accepting Christ in the Vietnam Mennonite Church. This was part of a trip that Tuyen led with Joe Miller (Bishop Conestoga River District) and William Higgins (Global teacher for EMM and resident theologian for LMC) and myself where we traveled across the Mekong in Vietnam. In a slow, bumpy ride, we visited seven congregations and two future sights for church plants.
One of our adventures took us by sampan deep into a swamp where farmers created ponds to raise shrimp, crabs, and fish organically. At a house at the end of a channel, we feasted on the largest and best-tasting prawn I ever had in my life. Then we prayed a blessing upon the place to become a church and for a well to be drilled for fresh water. Currently, a small group of believers has a bible study at this location. It was exciting to think that this Bible study will become a church in the swamp in the next year.
Another adventure took us to four Mennonite churches in the Ho Chi Minh metropolis. At each congregation, we met the leaders, feasted on fruit while drinking tea, learned about the church, and then prayed for them. These are leaders who sacrifice a lot to nurture the people and missionally engage the neighborhood. They receive very little compensation and often have great obstacles to overcome to serve the Lord. But the joy of the Spirit and peace of Christ exudes from them in their love for Jesus and the people. We heard stories of people getting rid of ancestral shrines because they put their faith in Christ. At one church, youth ministry consisted of a bible study among young people who lived at a factory cleaning fish all day, but now they clean fish all day, but now we’re also hearing about Jesus.
I was told by the president of Vietnam that they need LMC. I said it is LMC that needs to learn from the Vietnam Mennonite Church. Our brothers and sisters around the world are living in movement because of their love for Jesus. To be a Spirit-led movement takes prayer, equipping, and strategizing. But, it also requires a passion for Christ to whom we’ve given our lives and for whom we live. The Bishop Elders Team is encouraging everyone to allow the Spirit to reignite their passion and to combine faith and action by not simply sitting in the pews but going and sharing Christ with the world.

Doy gracias al Señor Jesucristo por todas las formas en que el Espíritu se está moviendo a través de LMC. Fue emocionante pensar que este estudio bíblico se convertirá en una iglesia en el pantano el próximo año.
Otra aventura nos llevó a cuatro iglesias menonitas en la metrópolis de Ho Chi Minh. En cada congregación conocimos a los líderes, comimos frutas mientras tomábamos té, aprendimos sobre la iglesia y luego oramos por ellos. Estos son líderes que sacrifican mucho para nutrir a la gente e involucrar misionalmente al vecindario. Reciben muy poca compensación ya menudo tienen grandes obstáculos que superar para servir al Señor. Pero el gozo del Espíritu y la paz de Cristo emanan de ellos en su amor por Jesús y por el pueblo. Escuchamos historias de personas que se deshicieron de los santuarios ancestrales porque pusieron su fe en Cristo. En una iglesia, el ministerio juvenil consistía en un estudio bíblico entre los jóvenes que vivían en una fábrica donde limpian pescado todo el día, pero que ahora también escuchaban acerca de Jesús.
El presidente de Vietnam me dijo que necesitan LMC. Dije que es LMC quien necesita aprender de la Iglesia Menonita de Vietnam. Nuestros hermanos y hermanas de todo el mundo viven en movimiento por su amor a Jesús. Ser un movimiento dirigido por el Espíritu requiere oración, preparación y elaboración de estrategias. Pero también requiere una pasión por Cristo a quien hemos dado nuestra vida y por quien vivimos. El Equipo de Obispos Ancianos está alentando a todos a permitir que el Espíritu reavive su pasión y a combinar la fe y la acción no simplemente sentándose en los bancos, sino yendo y compartiendo a Cristo con el mundo.
